    Comment Text:

This proposal goes against the common good in many ways.

Firstly, it will allow the undermining of our elections and democracy itself.

Moreover, allowing betting on our elections will encourage manipulation of elections by those in power. The mudslinging and lies about opponents up for elections is bad now. This would encourage those betting to spread even more lies for financial gain.

Voter confidence–on both sides of the political spectrum–is at an all-time low now. To allow betting would reduce the confidence even further. We want more people to vote and to have their voices heard. The lower the belief in the reliability of results, the less likely people are to vote. This would create direct harm to our democracy since democracy depends upon the participation of as many people as possible.

The very idea of betting on elections is appalling on many levels.
