Free and fair elections that people trust are the most essential element of our democracy. Allowing betting on election outcomes will create strong financial incentives for special interests to manipulate and interfere in our elections. In turn, it will reduce voter confidence, and lead to a perception that election outcomes are not solely determined by voters’ choices, but also by those who bet on election results. This is a dangerous outcome in an era when faith in elections is already being undermined. Betting on election outcomes must not be allowed to happen.
